Why have a Southwest Soccer Program? What does it offer?
The Southwest Soccer Program is designed to give youth a fun and safe place to be when school is not in session; providing them an opportunity to develop skills, build character, and partake in challenging fun activity. Besides the program’s emphasis on the physical and health aspects of the sport, the soccer program provides students with vital developmental assets which help them make safe and healthy choices in their teen years.

Like many of our other Neighborhood Services Programs, this program exemplifies our continued commitment to our community’s youth by providing them asset based programming in the neighborhoods where they live. Weekends are a critical time for our youth. That time can be a time of risk to kid’s health and safety or an opportunity to learn and grow in a protected environment. These programs not only help relieve the stress of today’s busy families but offer kids a fun place to “hang out” with their friends in a supervised setting on Saturdays.

Where did the Southwest Soccer Program originate? How is it funded?
The idea for the Southwest Soccer Program was developed in 2000 in response to the needs assessed by the City of Santa Rosa's Neighborhood Revitalization Program and City Council. The program came to fruition as a result of the fundraising efforts and support of Jim Wieschendorff and the Santa Rosa East Rotary Club. Additional support was offered by Exchange Bank, Sonoma State University Women's Soccer team, Athletico Santa Rosa, and various volunteers and sponsors.
In 2005, the Santa Rosa Recreation & Parks Department inherited the Southwest Soccer Program. Today the program is supported primarily through Measure O funding.

Although the Southwest Soccer Program has been offered by a variety of service providers over the years, it has maintained the same values and objectives the program was founded on. The program serves youth in a safe and organized environment and offers recreational opportunities to develop soccer skills, support teamwork, and promote literacy. Through this, Southwest Soccer emphasizes responsibility, honesty, respect, sportsmanship, and community environment as youth develop assets and life skills.

The Southwest Soccer Program greatly appreciates the efforts of Jim Wieschendorff and the Santa Rosa East Rotary Club. The program wouldn't be where it is today without your support!

Thank you Jim Wieschendorff and the Santa Rosa East Rotary Club!

 Soccer and Literacy

A 2005 grant from Exchange Bank sponsored the Southwest Soccer Program's efforts in supporting literacy, learning, and academic efforts. Over the years, the grant has supported various services including literacy coaching, homework assistance, and one-on-one tutoring. Exchange Bank's grant also funded materials for both the program and youth participants including pencils, t-shirts, backpacks, and books.

This season, Exchange Bank's grant funded the purchase of 125 copies of "The Everything Kids' Soccer Book." Each week, youth will participate in a 35-minute literacy circle where they read and discuss one chapter from the book. The focus of that chapter will be the focus of the rest of the day's skill building drills and activities. At the end of the Spring 2009 session, each participant will take home a copy of the book.
